Escape From New York (1981)
Necessity is the mother of the artists invention - Part I
The wire-frame computer graphics on the display screens in the glider were not actually computer graphics (in 1981 computers capable of 3d wire-frame imaging were way too expensive for their budget). To generate the wire-frame images, they built a model of the city, painted it black, attached bright white tape to the model buildings in an orderly grid, and moved a camera through the model city.
Necessity is the mother of the artists invention - Part II
The only scene actually filmed in New York was the opening dolly shot. To create a decaying and semi-destroyed version of New York City, Carpenter and his crew opted for East St.Louis, Illinois, because it was filled with old buildings and it had entire neighborhoods burned out during a massive urban fire. In many scenes, they used semi transparent panels with the New York skyline painted on them to overlay the torn streets of St. Louis.
How the movie influenced books, games and movies
Popular video game director Hideo Kojima was inspired by Snake Plissken for the character Solid Snake of his Metal Gear series.
William Gibson stated that he was influenced by the world depicted in Escape from New York for his novel Neuromancer.
J. J. Abrams, producer of the movie Cloverfield, mentioned Escape from New York's poster as inspiration for the scene showing the cut off head of the Statue of Liberty.
