The Shining (1980)
How Kubrick staged the creepy Overlook Hotel set
The Overlook Hotel's exterior was filmed at the Timberline Lodge, Oregon, while the interiors were built at Elstree Studios, England. The intense heat generated by the lighting used to simulate the snowy day outside caused several fires in the lounge set. Later it was rebuilt with a higher ceiling to use it for the snake-filled tomb in Spielberg's 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. The maze
was built on an airfield at Elstree and it was so large that. crew members often got lost in it.
Kubrick psychological mind games with Shelley Duvall
From the very beginning Kubrick imagined a more timid version of Wendy than the book's character and he believed Shelley Duvall would be perfect for the role. Filming for 13 months, 6 days a week, 16 hours a day was very stressful for her, but Kubrick, famously very demanding on set, often berated and nagged her on set, almost driving her to tears, to make Shelley's performance more realistic and enhance her terror.
The shining that never shined between King and Kubrick
King's initial draft of the screenplay was rejected by Kubrick as too close to the novel. King was also disappointed with Kubrick's final adaptation, particularly the changes made to Jack Torrance's character and the casting of Nicholson (King suggested Jon Voight instead). King believed that Nicholson's portrayal made Jack seem too unstable from the outset, while in the novel he is a good man who is gradually corrupted by alcoholism and the evil overlook hotel influence.
